The successors of the Cortex-A73 and Cortex-A53 are the first to support DynamIQ big.LITTLE technology. This is the advanced version of the ARM big.LITTLE. For starters, the big.LITTLE is a computing architecture which helps in dividing a multi-core processor into two groups. The cluster made with high-performance cores is dedicated for power hungry processes while the other one featuring low power CPUs is tuned for energy efficiency.
With DynamIQ, there will be no such thing as two clusters. Instead, the CPU can make up clusters with any type and number of cores based on the respective requirements. For example an octa-core DynamIQ big.LITTLE processor can switch between any configurations like 1+7, 2+6, 4+4, etc. Another new thing about the Cortex-A75 and Cortex-A55 cores is the new ARMv8.2 architecture. However, the latest CPUs will also be compatible with ARMv8-A and ARMv8.1. The ARMv8.3 architecture will also be partially supported.
ARM Cortex-A75
This is the successor of the Cortex-A73. The Cortex-A75 is purely aimed at performance. The premium CPU can run at up to 3.0 GHz in 10 nm processors. It offers 20 percent performance boost over its predecessor. The Cortex-A75 features a brand new memory sub-system. Together with the DynamIQ technology, it can facilitate access to the shared cluster L3 cache, asynchronous frequencies, and independent voltage and power to individual CPUs or groups of cores. Furthermore, the Cortex-A75 CPU also sports a dedicated L2 cache for each core, This results in half the latency time of conventional high-performance processors.
ARM Cortex-A55
The Cortex-A55 is ARM’s latest low-end power efficient CPU architecture. It is 18 percent more powerful and consumes 15 percent less energy than its predecessor, the Cortex-A53. Just like the Cortex-A75, the Cortex-A55 comes with a new memory sub-system. It enables L3 cache sharing and each processing core has its own L2 cache memory. This makes the Cortex-A55 about 200 percent better in managing memory workloads than the Cortex-A53.
ARM Mali-G72
ARM’s Mali –G72 is the second GPU after the Mali-G71 to be developed using the Bifrost architecture. The 16 nm graphics processor is 25 percent power efficient than its predecessor. This is combined with 20 percent more performance density leading. Jointly, they make the Mali-G72 about 40 percent more powerful than the Mali-G71. In addition to the above-mentioned points, the Cortex-A75, Cortex-A55 and the Mali-G72 comes with generous improvements on AI (Artificial Intelligence), VR (Virtual Reality) and MR (Mixed Reality). Stay tuned, we will be coming back with a detailed analysis on each of ARM’s new components soon.
