The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) expects that the cash on delivery (COD) payment option will lure more customers into booking railway tickets online. This will help in cutting some pressure off the offline reservation counters. IRCTC asserts that both time and money are wasted in traveling to and from the railway ticket counters at stations. With the COD mode of payment, any individual may reserve their seats online and pay only after getting the hard copy of the ticket in hand.

To avail the COD facility, you need to pay an additional Rs. 90 for transactions not exceeding Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 120 for more than Rs. 5,000. IRCTC will also charge service tax on these extra payments. You will need to do a one-time registration with your PAN Card or Aadhar Card in order to opt for the pay on delivery service. In the case of refusal or cancellation of the COD tickets, you will be entitled to pay both the Rs. 90 or Rs. 120 extra charge as well as the cancellation fees. With your Aadhaar Card or PAN Card disclosed to the Indian Railways, there is absolutely no way you can escape from these charges. So, fill up the delivery address properly and buy the ticket only if you really need them.
