Micromax has officially listed Micromax Canvas Elanza 2 A121 which was earlier leaked online. The successor of the Elanza A93 clearly reflects a new approach from Micromax at a budget price point. It comes with upgraded Android 4.3 jelly bean (Still no hint of KitKat) and Snapdragon branding on the processor, which will definitely give it marketing advantage over other MediaTek based budget smartphones and will also help it compete against Tier one manufacturers lurking to capture Entry level smartphone market.

Camera and Internal Storage

It appears like Micromax has not taken much progress in the camera segment as the handset is said to pack an 8 MP primary camera sensor that is accompanied with a 2 MP front-facer on board basic video calls and selfies. The primary camera is capable of recording 720p HD videos, thus pushing Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 to its limits. The camera features are in line with what we expect in sub 9,000 INR price range. If you are looking for a camera specific domestic phone you should probably extend your budget and consider phones like Xolo Q1010i and Lava Iris 504q Plus. The internal storage capacity is standard 4 GB, which can be further expanded up to 32 GB with the help of a micro SD card. We are are not great fans of 4 GB internal storage and perhaps domestic manufacturers should discontinue this trend and provide with at least 8 GB of faster NAND flash storage. Ofcourse you can also rely on 32 GB secondary MicroSD storage for all your Media files.

Processor and Battery

The new Canvas Elanza 2 A121 is claimed to house a quad-core processor ticking at 1.2 GHz speed. This time Micromax has ditched MediaTek chipset and opted for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 200 MSM8212 processor which is based on 45nm Process technology, which is not as energy efficient as 28nm Process technology based Cortex A7 MT6582.  The chipset also uses Adreno 302 graphics and supports Single Channel DDR2 memory. The processor is backed by 1 GB RAM for efficient multi tasking. The Canvas Elanza 2 will arrive with a 2,000 mAh battery onboard that is rated to provide decent battery backup delivering talk time of up to 7.5 hours and a standby time of up to 240 hours. Though this appears to be average, it is pretty much acceptable as it is a mid-range smartphone.

Display and Features

Talking about the display, the Canvas Elanza 2  boast a 5 inch HD capacitive touch screen display featuring  HD resolution of 1280×720 pixels. It’s a notable increase from the qHD display on its predecessor and is also the most you can expect in this price range. Besides resolution, we hope Micromax will provide with decent brightness and color reproduction to compete with phones like Moto G. On the software front, the Canvas Elanza 2 will run on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean operating system that is impressive and feature connectivity aspects such as 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 , micro USB, GPS and dual SIM support.

Comparison

The Micromax Canvas Elanza 2 could find a tough competition from news creator – Moto E, best selling Moto G, similarly specced Gionee M2, Panasonic P31 and others quad core smartphones below 10,000 INR.

Price and Conclusion

The handset is not yet official and there is no clear picture on its pricing, but judging by the price of the import units, the price is expected to be around 9,000 INR. Moreover, the handset comes with several notable enhancements as compared to its predecessor and it is definitely on par with the other smartphones in this sub Rs 10,000 price range. Micromax should not be taking a very long time to launch this new handset in India. Will it be a major competition for upcoming Moto E? we will have to wait till May 13 to find that out!
