Design & Build Quality

OPPO seems highly concentrated on the design and looks of most of its smartphones. Likewise, OPPO Mirror 5 also comes in a beautiful looking shell. It has a shiny crystal patterned glass back with cut glass design. Although, the remaining body is made with plastic, the frame of the handset is pretty solid build and it does not cover the sides of the screen and the back, which actually looks good. The power button is on the right side,

and the volume rocker is seated on the left side.

There is a 3.5 mm audio jack on the top, located next to an Infrared blaster.

MicroUSB port is at the bottom of the phone.

Talking about the front and back, the front has an LED indicator, and front camera at the top where the capacitive navigation buttons are at the bottom of the display. The back cover is removable, but the battery is not removable, under the back cover there is a microSD slot and the dual SIM slot. On the top left there is the camera module with an LED flash right below it. A single speaker grille is on the bottom of the back panel that means you have to keep the back upwards while playing audio. The dimensions are 5.6 x 2.8 x 0.30 inches and weighs 160 grams which is lot more than normal 5.0 inch display phone. The bulk is little unusual, but it covers up with the good build quality and sleek finish.

Display

The OPPO Mirror 5 features a 5 inch IPS LCD with a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels. The display is the below par factor of this phone, we expected at least a 1280 x 720 p screen. The display looks dull and unattractive, but the colour reproduction and viewing angles are decent. At this price point, we expected a much better display as low resolution means uneasy user experience when browsing web pages and watching pictures or videos.

UI

OPPO Mirror 5 comes with its self-customized Color OS based on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. It is a heavily customized UI, offers variety of themes and lock screen widgets. It has customized app launchers, skinned menu and notification panel. You can also customize themes according to your mood plus you have an option for single handed operation as well. You will find many on-screen and off-screen gestures like double tap to unlock, pinch to launch camera, swipe 3 fingers for screenshot and more.

Camera

The rear camera on OPPO Mirror 5 has 8 MP sensor with f/2.2 aperture and 1.4-micron pixel size. It has OPPO’s Pure Image 2.0+ Engine technology for added quality and creativity. It offers few features to enhance the experience, some of them are HDR, Face Beauty, and Panorama- which are common in most of the devices these days. The rear camera is capable of recording 1920x1080p resolution videos, Time-lapse videos, stop-motion animations as well.

The results were good under direct light, the pictures produced were rich in colour, the contrast was also nicely adjusted and the details were about average. In low light and indoor conditions, there was visible noise in some cases otherwise the results were good most of the times. The front camera is 5 MP; this is a really impressive front camera if compared to the other competitors in the market. The selfies were clear, grain-free, and the Face Beauty feature did not over process the selfies which is a good thing.

Performance

OPPO mirror 5 has decent hardware specifications which include a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor clocked at 1.2GHz and Adreno 306 as Graphic processing unit with 2 GB of RAM. No shutter noticed while launching multiple applications or switching between them, using camera, video playback and browsing internet. However this device fails in running graphic intense games, heavy graphics lead to lagging and freezing in some cases. The overall performance is OK, but aggressive users will not be convinced with the performance.

Battery

As far as the battery backup is concerned, it comes with a 2420 mAh non-removable battery, it is a decent battery but it is not that exceptional to keep it running for the whole day in single charge. Heavy users may struggle with the battery life as it hardly manages to run throughout a busy day. It offers a couple of battery saving features, which will help you have that extra bit of juice from it.

Verdict

The OPPO Mirror 5 is listed in the over-crowded lower- mid range segment of smartphones, which definitely makes the competition very tough. Although, it offers a good design and software experience but the display resolution is surprisingly low. At this price, it competes with phones like ASUS Zenphone 2 and Lenovo K3 Note, which offer a better package overall.
