Looks like Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi can’t catch a break. After going through several rounds of security related rumors and troubles, Xiaomi has again landed in trouble zone, with Delhi High Court granting an ex parte injunction order against it for infringing on Ericsson’s Standard Essential Patents (SEPs).
This essentially means that Xiaomi is banned from selling, advertising, manufacturing or importing devices that infringe upon Ericsson’s patents. It is not yet clear if this applies to all Xiaomi devices or just a few. Reportedly, Swedish telecommunications company Erricson has also filed similar lawsuit against Micromax, Gionee and Intex, but the court has swiftly taken action against Xiaomi, allegedly because they have failed to respond to Ericsson’s 6 communication attempts since July 2014. According to SpicyIp, court has appointed local commissioners to ensure that this order is implemented and all Xiaomi imports are banned. Xiaomi is yet to receive legal notice from Delhi High Court. It will take some time for the exact impacts of this injunction to be clear in India. India is an important market for Xiaomi and this might turn out to be a major roadblock for its India operations.
